Photo-elastic stress analysis to show differing fringe patterns obtained by vertical loading of resin models representing subcapital fractures of the femur treated by conventional (A) and low angle (B) nailing. While the patterns are accurate for the homogeneous models themselves they cannot portray the true strains and stresses in the actual subcapital fracture. Deductions based on this type of analysis are therefore likely to be misleading. STABILITY AND UMON IN SUBCAPITAL FRACTURES OF THE FEMUR
